Margaret Symonds' first solely authored book, dedicated to her late father John Addington Symonds and published in the year of his death. (Their collaborative book of essays, OUR LIFE IN THE SWISS HIGHLANDS, had appeared in 1892.) Both Margaret Symonds, who was then 24, and some of her descriptions in this book of the Italian countryside, were romantically admired at the time by her close friend Virginia Woolf, who was 21.
