This is one of approximately 25 copies of the Meltzer poems only, issued separately. What constitutes the first printing of Meltzer’s first book, preceded only by a small broadside included in the first issue of Wallace Berman’s SEMINA. One poem here is dedicated to the Berman family, another titled, “For Wallace Berman, Poet-Maker.” SIGNED by Meltzer.

One of 775 copies on Arak paper. INSCRIBED by Patchen to Xenia and John Cage on the front free endpaper, “for John & Xenia / in friendship / & admiration / Kenneth Patchen / July 1942.” Patchen and Cage collaborated on the radio work THE CITY WEARS A SLOUCH HAT in 1942. Cage was a fan of Patchen’s ALBION MOONLIGHT, and wanted to work with him. Additionally, the Cages stayed with the Patchens that same year, in their Greenwich Village apartment.

First edition. 12mo. [42 pp]. Near fine decorated yellow cloth binding in an undescribed, near fine, price-clipped dust jacket. The first state jacket Morgan describes as “pink and purple.. with red and blue lettering,” making no mention of the “gift edition” statement on the front flap as on this copy, or the silver printing on the front panel. Since publication of the bibliography, many combinations of book and jacket have surfaced, leaving this bibliographically ambiguous. A uncommon variant of a less-common Patchen title.
