1958.

Early double-sided mail art piece by Berman postmarked 1958, the year after his famous Ferus bust. Berman has initialed the top corner, and underneath the image he boldly addressed the card in black paint. On the verso Berman has painted his return address and the words: “GWINE,” “Massuh,” “Ah Gonna,” and the message “What’s Conleys address my books not up here yet, will then mail yours.” Single pin hole to top edge, minor wear, nice overall. One of the more elaborate pieces of Berman mail art I’ve handled, and larger (7 ½ x 5 ¼ inches) than usual.

Original mail art collage featuring a photograph by Wallace Berman of several masked figures marching in the Mad Mammoth Monster Poetry Reading parade. The card is addressed in Berman’s hand to Auerhahn Press and Berman has written “1959” beneath the photo. Stamped and postmarked. This photo is reproduced in Wallace Berman: Photographs, p. 125. Small sepia stain to corner, card just perceptibly toned (not affecting photo), but nice overall. A vintage, early mail art piece from Berman, and larger than usual (8.5” x 5.25”). The parade was part of a benefit event for Auerhahn Press, with whom Berman was associated.
